🐠 Honeycomb Grouper (Epinephelus merra)

📋 The Honeycomb Grouper, also known as the Black-Spotted Rockcod, Dwarf-Spotted Grouper, or Wire-Netting Cod, has a distinctive ochre-to-light-brown body covered in small brown hexagons with pale interspaces, forming the honeycomb-like network that gives the species its name.
It lives across the Indo-Pacific, Australia, and French Polynesia, on reefs down to depths of over 40 metres. It's one of the smaller members of its genus, but still a substantial fish at up to 36cm, so plan for the adult and not the small juvenile. It's a solitary, territorial ambush predator that's shy at first, often hiding until food is offered, then grows noticeably more social and confident over the following weeks.
It's not reef safe: it will eat any fish or invertebrate that fits in its mouth. Keep it as the only grouper (dominant males fight over territory), give it strong filtration for its hefty waste output, and plan on at least 265L, or about 700L for a full adult.
