We want to be genuinely upfront on this one. While this species is genuinely one of the smaller members of the Epinephelus genus, it can still reach up to 32-36cm (roughly 13-14 inches) as an adult, and is genuinely rarely seen in the aquarium trade given its eventual large size relative to most home tanks. Please plan for its full adult size, not the small juvenile typically sold.
 
📋 The Honeycomb Grouper , also known as the Black-Spotted Rockcod, Dwarf-Spotted Grouper, or Wire-Netting Cod, has a genuinely distinctive ochre-to-light-brown body covered in small brown hexagons with pale interspaces, forming the honeycomb-like network that gives the species its common name.
Native to a genuinely wide range across the Indo-Pacific, Australia, and French Polynesia, this species inhabits reef environments to depths of over 40 metres.
This is a genuinely solitary, territorial ambush predator, and we want to be honest that dominant males can fight intensely and violently with each other over territory, sometimes fatally. It's genuinely shy at first, often hiding until food is presented, but becomes noticeably more social and confident over the following weeks. We want to be upfront: this species is not reef safe, and will genuinely eat any fish or invertebrate that fits in its mouth. It should be the only grouper in the tank, and genuinely produces significant waste for its size, so strong filtration matters.
