📋 The Randall's Shrimp Goby, also known as Randall's Prawn Goby or the Orange Stripe Prawn Goby, has a genuinely distinctive pearly white body crossed by narrow orange bands, with a tall, fan-shaped first dorsal fin marked by a prominent black spot surrounded by smaller white spots.
Native to the Western Pacific, from the Moluccas and Solomon Islands north to the Ryukyu Islands and south to the northern Great Barrier Reef, with populations also around Palau, this species inhabits clear reef environments with sand, rubble, and small caves.
A genuinely charming natural partnership defines this species: it forms a real, specific commensal relationship with the pistol shrimp Alpheus randalli, sharing a burrow the shrimp digs and maintains, while the goby hovers near the entrance keeping watch, retreating quickly at the first sign of danger. This is a genuinely peaceful, easy-to-maintain species once established, though we want to be honest that it's genuinely a known jumper, so a tight-fitting lid is essential, especially given it startles easily. New arrivals may not feed for several days after introduction, so please allow time to acclimate. It's considered reef safe with caution — it's an excellent reef fish overall, but may pose a threat to small ornamental shrimp.
