    Popular species include the Royal Gramma (Gramma loreto), a Caribbean icon with a striking two-tone purple-to-yellow body; the Chalk Bass (Serranus tortugarum), a hardy species that can be kept in small groups when introduced together; the Yellow and Blue Assessor Basslets (Assessor spp.), genuinely known for hovering upside-down beneath cave ceilings; and the Candy Basslet (Liopropoma carmabi), a small, jewel-like deep-reef species.     Care tips:

    • Tank size: 115–150 L (30+ gallons) minimum, depending on species

    • Temp: 22–26 °C

    • Salinity: 1.020–1.025

    • Diet: Carnivore — brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, chopped meaty foods

    • Behavior: Genuinely upside-down cave hovering is normal, not a sign of illness

    • Most species best kept singly, though Chalk Bass tolerate small groups if introduced together

    • Secure lid essential

    • Gramma species are notorious jumpers
