📋 The Yellowtail Reef Basslet, also known as the Pinstriped Basslet, has a poetic colouration: a solid pastel pink-to-purple body splashed with rich golden yellow around the mouth, fins, and tail, with the eye ringed in contrasting indigo blue.
It comes from the Western Atlantic, from North Carolina to Brazil, where it lives on deep coral reefs and rocky areas at depths of 60 to 300 feet. That's why it's rarely seen in the aquarium trade, and why it's such an exquisite find. It's a reserved, shy fish that will stand its ground if provoked, and while generally peaceful it can become territorial in a smaller tank or alongside similarly shaped fish. It's reef safe with caution: it will eat tiny ornamental crustaceans, so choose tankmates with care. It thrives in pristine water with low nitrates, and it reaches about 10cm, so plan on at least 115L with heavy rockwork and plenty of hiding places.
