🐠 Black Cap Basslet (Gramma melacara)
Marine Reef-Safe Cave-Dwelling Basslet • Deep Purple Body With Black Diagonal Cap • Genuine Upside-Down Swimmer • Beginner-Friendly Marine Fish
📋 The Black Cap Basslet , also known as the Blackcap Basslet or Blackcap Gramma, has a genuinely striking deep violet-to-magenta body topped with a bold black diagonal "cap" running from the snout, through the eye, to the start of the dorsal fin.
Native to the Western Atlantic, from the Bahamas and southern Florida throughout the Caribbean, this species is genuinely a real Atlantic outlier compared to most of our Indo-Pacific stock, and a close relative of the popular Royal Gramma. In the wild, it inhabits genuinely deep reef drop-offs, vertical faces, and caves, typically found deeper than 20 metres.
A genuinely important behaviour to know about upfront: this species normally swims and rests upside-down against cave ceilings and rock overhangs — a completely natural deep-water adaptation, not a sign of illness or distress, so please don't be alarmed if you see this. Given its deep-water origin, subdued lighting is genuinely recommended over intense reef lighting.
It's fully reef safe and ignores corals and most invertebrates entirely, though it's genuinely territorial once established and shouldn't be housed with other Gramma species unless the tank is genuinely very large. It's also a genuinely capable jumper, so a secure lid matters.
