📋 The Tobacco Basslet, also known as the Tobacco Bass or Tobaccofish, has a genuinely attractive tan-to-burnt-orange body with a wide, distinctive horizontal orange band running the length of the body, and darker brown-to-black mottled markings across the dorsal side.
Native to the Caribbean and Western Atlantic, this species is genuinely found hovering above sandy, rubble, and rocky areas near reefs, darting out from cover to seize passing prey.
We want to share a genuinely interesting fact: like all members of the Serranus genus, this species is a real hermaphrodite. This is genuinely one of the larger, bolder basslets available, growing up to 18cm, and while not overtly aggressive, it will genuinely defend its favoured hiding spot, chasing off fish that venture too close. We want to be honest that it's genuinely a confident, active predator, and as it grows, it will threaten small crustaceans and tiny fish such as damselfish, gobies, and blennies. It's considered reef safe with caution — it won't pick at corals, but is best kept singly, or with several introduced simultaneously if a small group is desired, and housed with robust tank mates too large to be considered prey.
