📋 The Randall's Assessor Basslet has a genuinely striking deep blue-to-black body with vibrant blue-edged fins, darker spots, and can even display a dusky purple hue as it matures. Its colouration genuinely shifts dramatically depending on the viewing angle and lighting, appearing most vivid under whiter light.
Native to the Western Pacific, including reefs around Japan and the Philippines, this species inhabits shallow, dimly lit or shaded reef locations at depths of roughly 1 to 6 metres.
This is genuinely the third, lesser-known member of the Assessor genus, alongside the more familiar Yellow and Blue Assessors, and shares their real, characteristic upside-down swimming behaviour, often seen hovering beneath reef overhangs or within caves. We want to be honest that this species is genuinely one of the rarest fish in the hobby — it's occasionally collected in Japan but almost never imported, making successful captive-breeding programs the primary source of specimens today. It's genuinely shy and reclusive when first introduced, becoming more confident with time and proper aquascaping. It's fully reef safe, and while peaceful toward other species, it's genuinely territorial toward its own kind, so only one male is recommended per tank unless a group is introduced together in a genuinely spacious system.
