🐠 Chalk Bass (Serranus tortugarum)

Marine Reef-Safe Nano Basslet • Blue-Purple Body With Orange Vertical Bars • Genuine Atlantic & Caribbean Species • Beginner-Friendly Marine Fish

📋 The Chalk Bass , also known as the Chalk Basslet, has a genuinely attractive slender body in soft blue-to-lavender tones, accented with orange-to-reddish vertical bars that become more vivid under good lighting.

Native to the Western Atlantic, from Florida's eastern coast through the Bahamas and Virgin Islands to Honduras, with its largest populations across Caribbean reefs, this species is genuinely another real geographic outlier compared to most of our Indo-Pacific stock, inhabiting a genuinely wide depth range from shallow reefs down to over 400 metres.

This is a genuinely social species, naturally forming loose groups over rubble, sand flats, and seagrass beds in the wild. We want to be honest that it can genuinely be reclusive when first introduced, retreating into shelter, and subdued lighting alongside live foods can help encourage it out. It's fully reef safe and won't harm corals or sessile invertebrates, though larger, mature specimens may occasionally target very small ornamental shrimp. It does best kept in a small group introduced simultaneously, and is genuinely also a capable jumper, so a secure lid matters, especially during the settling-in period.
