This collection covers some of the reef's most capable ambush predators, and a few genuine surprises among them. The Marine Betta looks unassuming until it's threatened — at which point it curls its body and flashes a large eyespot near its tail, convincingly mimicking the head of a venomous moray eel to scare off attackers. The Giant Grouper, sold here only as a juvenile, is one of the largest bony fish alive, capable of exceeding 400kg at full size — a genuine long-term commitment, not a casual purchase. And the Soapfish in this collection carry their own defense: a toxic skin secretion released under stress that can affect the whole tank, itself included, in a confined space. #FishShopPhuketThailand

    Our Grouper, Rockcod & Soapfish Collection

    Species range widely in eventual size and temperament. The Coral Hind, Harlequin, and Blue Line Groupers stay manageable for a large home aquarium. The Panther and Argus Groupers grow considerably larger and need real long-term planning. The Giant Grouper is the outlier — an aquarium-trade juvenile of a species that can eventually outgrow almost any home tank, better suited to public aquariums at full size. The Marine Betta stands apart from the true groupers entirely, prized more for its eel-mimicking defense than its predatory habits. Six Lined and Arrowhead Soapfish round out the group, along with the smaller Freckleface Podge.

     

     

    A Few Things Worth Knowing First

    Every fish here is a predator — anything small enough to fit in its mouth is fair game, so tank mate sizing matters from day one. Soapfish specifically should never be stressed or handled roughly; the toxin they release under pressure has been known to kill an entire tank in a confined space, themselves included. And before buying a Giant Grouper, have a real plan for where it goes once it outgrows your current setup — this isn't a fish you can downsize later.
