🐠 Blue Devil Damsel (Chrysiptera cyanea)
Marine Reef-Safe Damselfish • Vivid Blue Body With Yellow Snout & Tail On Males • Genuine Colour-Shifting Species • Beginner-Friendly Marine Fish
📋 The Blue Devil Damsel , also known as the Sapphire Devil, Blue Damselfish, or Orangetail Blue Damsel, has a genuinely vivid, deep blue body. Males develop a bright yellow-orange snout that can extend onto the chest, fins, and tail, while females and juveniles stay almost entirely blue, typically showing a small black spot at the base of the dorsal fin. A genuinely striking natural ability: this species can rapidly darken to an almost black colour in response to stress or external stimuli.
Native to a genuinely vast range across the Indo-West Pacific, from the eastern Indian Ocean and Western Australia to New Guinea, the Solomon and Mariana Islands, Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and the Ryukyu Islands, this species inhabits densely coral-rich lagoons, reef flats, and inshore reefs.
This is genuinely one of the hardiest, most widely available damselfish in the hobby, and while some hobbyists have historically used it to cycle new tanks, we'd genuinely recommend a fishless cycling method instead for the fish's welfare. We want to be honest: it's a genuinely bold, feisty little fish that will defend its territory fiercely, even against much larger tank mates, so it's best added later in your stocking order rather than as one of the first fish. It's fully reef safe and won't harm corals or invertebrates.
