📋 The Fiji Blue Devil Damselfish , also known as the South Seas Devil or Village Belle, has a genuinely vivid blue body with a yellow belly and yellow dots scattered along the sides. Genuinely unusually for a damselfish, this species is sexually dimorphic — females show a yellow dorsal fin, while males remain solid blue.
We want to be genuinely clear about a common point of confusion: this species is closely related to, and was historically classified together with, the more widespread Blue Devil Damsel (Chrysiptera cyanea), and the two share several common names in the trade, including simply "Blue Devil Damsel." The reliable way to tell them apart is the yellow belly and side dots genuinely unique to this species, versus the yellow snout-and-tail pattern of C. cyanea.
Native to the Western Pacific, specifically Fiji and Tonga, this species inhabits lagoons and offshore coral reefs at shallow depths of around 1 to 10 metres, where it's genuinely often seen in small groups. Under bright light, the blue genuinely takes on neon-like greenish reflections, and the fish can darken under certain conditions.
This is a genuinely hardy species and a popular first fish for new marine tanks. We want to be honest that it becomes increasingly territorial with age, and is genuinely best not paired with more than one of its own kind — though it's genuinely a little less aggressive than its close relative C. cyanea. It's fully reef safe and won't harm corals or invertebrates.
