📋 The Domino Damsel (Dascyllus trimaculatus), also known as the Three-Spot Damselfish, is sold as a genuinely charming juvenile with a jet-black body and three bright white spots. Adults lose most of this pattern, settling into a plain light-to-dark grey.
Found across an enormous range spanning the entire Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea to Hawaii, juveniles are commonly found sheltering in the tentacles of large carpet and magnificent anemones before transitioning to branching coral and rocky outcrops as they mature.
We want to be genuinely direct with you here: this is widely regarded as one of the most aggressively territorial damselfish in the entire hobby. Multiple experienced sources describe it as "the most notorious problem species" among damsels, and a fully grown adult will fearlessly attack fish many times its own size, potentially dominating and terrorising an entire community tank. Juveniles are genuinely much more peaceful, so if you're set on keeping this species, introducing it young — before larger, more established fish are already settled — and pairing it only with robust, assertive tank mates like tangs, larger angelfish, or triggerfish genuinely improves the odds of a workable outcome. It should not be housed with gobies, blennies, firefish, seahorses, or other small, timid species.
Despite this, it's genuinely one of the hardiest, most adaptable marine fish available, and fully reef safe toward corals and invertebrates.
