📋 The Yellowtail Damsel, also known as the Yellowtail Blue Damsel or Goldtail Demoiselle, has a vivid electric-blue body that transitions sharply into a bright lemon-yellow tail and dorsal fin. It's often confused with the closely related Azure Damselfish (Chrysiptera hemicyanea), which is reliably distinguished by yellow extending onto its belly as well as its tail.
It comes from a wide range across the Indo-Pacific, inhabiting sheltered lagoons and inshore reefs, often sheltering among Acropora coral branches, and feeds mainly on zooplankton in the water column. Every Yellowtail Damsel we ship is feeding well.
This is one of the calmer, more manageable damselfish species, and unlike many of its relatives, it's reef safe and won't bother corals or invertebrates. That said, its assertiveness tends to increase with age, and it can become territorial toward its own kind. If keeping a group, an odd-numbered shoal of 9 or more, introduced simultaneously as juveniles, works best, since smaller groups have been known to suffer fatalities from infighting. A single specimen or a known male-female pair is a simpler, equally successful option. A charming detail: after spawning, the male cares for and guards the eggs until they hatch. It reaches up to 7.5cm, so a 75L tank suits it well.
