📋 The Bluefin Damselfish (Neoglyphidodon melas), also known as the Black Damselfish, Bowtie Damselfish, or Royal Damsel, is sold as an attractive juvenile with a pale blue-white body, a bright yellow dorsal stripe, and vivid blue pectoral and anal fins.
Native to reefs and lagoons across the Indo-West Pacific, including the Red Sea, Persian Gulf, East Africa, and Australia, this species is typically solitary in the wild and often associates with soft corals, which make up much of its natural diet.
We want to be honest with you here: as this species matures, it undergoes a genuine and fairly dramatic transformation — losing its vivid juvenile colours and becoming an almost uniform dark grey to blue-black, while also developing a real reputation for aggression. Adults are typically only suitable for a large tank stocked with other robust, similarly assertive fish, and should be kept singly unless the aquarium is very large. It can also pose a genuine threat to ornamental shrimp and may nip at soft corals. This is a real "grows up differently than expected" situation — the charming juvenile you bring home is not a preview of the adult temperament or looks you'll end up with.
Despite this, it remains a genuinely hardy, easy-care fish for keepers who go in with realistic expectations about its adult behaviour.
