🐠 Central American Sharpnose Pufferfish (Canthigaster punctatissima)
A Dark, White-Spotted Eastern Pacific Rarity • A Charming Small Puffer • Best Kept One to a Tank
 
📋 The Central American Sharpnose Pufferfish, also known as the Spotted Sharpnose Puffer, has a dark brown body covered in numerous small white spots, with a whitish belly and largely transparent fins. It's native to the Eastern Pacific, around the Galápagos Islands and Mexico, which makes it a real geographic outlier compared with most of our Indo-Pacific stock. It's nearly identical in appearance to the White Spotted Sharpnose Puffer (Canthigaster jactator) from Hawaii, and geography is the most reliable way to tell them apart.
An interesting anatomical detail: it lacks pelvic fins entirely, using its pectoral fins to move around, and its teeth are fused into a beak-like structure used to crush prey. It isn't reef safe, since it will eat invertebrates that are part of a typical reef clean-up crew. It's intolerant of its own kind and other Canthigaster species, so keep just one per tank.
Like all pufferfish, it carries tetrodotoxin, a potent neurotoxin, so never eat a pufferfish, and wash your hands after tank maintenance. It can inflate to nearly twice its normal size when alarmed, so use a rigid container and not a net for transfers, since netting alarms it.
