We want to be genuinely upfront on this one. Like all pufferfish, this species carries tetrodotoxin in parts of its flesh, a natural predator defence. It can inflate its body to nearly twice its normal size when alarmed, and genuinely becomes stressed when caught in a net — please use a container instead during transfers.
 
📋 The Central American Sharpnose Pufferfish, also known as the Spotted Sharpnose Puffer, has a genuinely dark brown body covered in numerous small white spots, with a whitish belly and largely transparent fins.
Native to the Eastern Pacific, around the Galápagos Islands and Mexico, this species is genuinely a real geographic outlier compared to most of our Indo-Pacific stock. It's genuinely nearly identical in appearance to the White Spotted Sharpnose Puffer (Canthigaster jactator) from Hawaii, with geography being the most reliable way to distinguish them.
A genuinely interesting anatomical detail: this species lacks pelvic fins entirely, instead using its pectoral fins to move around. Its teeth are genuinely fused into a beak-like structure used to crush prey. We want to be upfront: this species is not reef safe, and will eat invertebrates that are part of a typical reef clean-up crew. It's genuinely intolerant of its own kind and other Canthigaster species, so only one should be kept per tank.
