📋 The Yellow Boxfish, also known as the Cubicus Boxfish, Polka Dot Boxfish, or Cube Boxfish, has a striking cube-shaped body. Juveniles are bright yellow covered in black spots, while adults gradually fade to a more subdued brown-grey with a reticulated pattern. It's native to a vast range from the Red Sea and Persian Gulf across the Indian and Pacific Oceans to Hawaii, where it inhabits lagoons and sheltered reefs, with juveniles living cryptically among Acropora corals.
It isn't reef safe: it will nibble at tubeworms and other small invertebrates. It's a poor, slow swimmer with a very small mouth that needs small, frequent meals, and it needs gradual, dimmable lighting and not sudden bright light, which can startle it into toxin release. Please plan from day one for its full 45cm (18") adult size and not the small juvenile typically sold, since this isn't a fish for a small or medium tank.
It can release ostracitoxin (pahutoxin) from its skin when severely stressed or injured, which can affect every other fish in the tank, including the boxfish itself.
