We want to be genuinely direct on this one, because we believe honesty matters more than a sale. This species is capable of releasing a genuinely deadly toxin called ostracitoxin (pahutoxin) from its skin when severely stressed, injured, or dying — this toxin can kill every other fish in the tank, including the boxfish itself. While this is a relatively rare event with careful husbandry, it is a real, well-documented risk, and most experts genuinely recommend keeping this species alone, in a species-only setup, away from excessive human traffic or activity near the tank. Please also plan from day one for its full 45cm (18") adult size, not the small juvenile typically sold — this is genuinely not a fish for a small or medium tank.
 
📋 The Yellow Boxfish , also known as the Cubicus Boxfish, Polka Dot Boxfish, or Cube Boxfish, has a genuinely striking cube-shaped body — juveniles are bright yellow covered in black spots, while adults gradually fade to a more subdued brown-grey with a reticulated pattern.
Native to a genuinely vast range from the Red Sea and Persian Gulf across the Indian and Pacific Oceans to Hawaii, this species inhabits lagoons and sheltered reefs, with juveniles genuinely living cryptically among Acropora corals.
We want to be upfront: this species is not reef safe, and will genuinely nibble at tubeworms and other small invertebrates. It's genuinely a poor, slow swimmer, has a very small mouth requiring small, frequent meals, and needs gradual, dimmable lighting rather than sudden bright light, which can genuinely startle it into toxin release.
