📋 The White Spotted Boxfish, also known as the Spotted Boxfish, Blue Boxfish, or Black Boxfish, shows striking differences between the sexes: males are blue with orange-yellow bands and spots on the sides, while females and juveniles are dark brown or black with white spots. It's native to the Indian and Pacific Oceans, from South Africa to Hawaii and the Galápagos Islands, where it inhabits coral reefs and rocky bottoms at depths of 1 to 30 metres.
An interesting fact: it's always born female, with individuals changing sex to become males as they mature. It's a relatively poor swimmer, relying on its toxin as its primary defence rather than speed, and it can jump from open-topped tanks despite its less nimble movement, so use a tight-fitting lid. It isn't reef safe: it will nibble at tubeworms and other invertebrates. Keep it alone or as a single confirmed male-female pair, never with another male, since bickering can trigger toxin release.
It can release ostracitoxin (also known as pahutoxin) from its skin when highly stressed, which can affect every other fish in the tank, so it suits experienced aquarists who can offer a calm, low-stress home.
