📋 The Porcupine Pufferfish, also known as the Long-Spine Porcupinefish or Balloonfish, has a charming light tan-to-grey body covered in dark brown blotches and black spots, with long spines running across its body that lie flat until the fish inflates. It's native to a wide range across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, where it inhabits shallow reefs, soft bottoms, and areas with rocky substrate.
It's one of the most iconic and popular pufferfish in the saltwater hobby, with real "puppy-dog" charm and personality: it recognises its keeper, swims to the glass when approached, and even begs for food, and some individuals spit water to gain attention. It's a naturally messy eater with a significant bioload, so strong filtration matters, and its powerful jaws are known to bite through tubing, wiring, and even heaters, so equipment placement needs real thought. It isn't reef safe: it will eat invertebrates including molluscs, sea urchins, hermit crabs, and crabs.
Aquarium specimens commonly reach about 30cm, though the species is recorded up to 50cm. Handle it with care: its long spines can catch in a net, and it may swallow air, which is dangerous for it, so always use a rigid container, and don't provoke it to inflate. Porcupinefish carry only trace amounts of tetrodotoxin, mainly in the skin and ovaries, and a severely stressed fish can release toxin into the water, so it should never be eaten.
