📋 The Valentini Puffer, also known as the Saddle Valentini Puffer or Black Saddle Puffer, has a distinctive white body speckled with blue-grey spots, marked by four bold dark saddle-like bands across its back, with hints of yellow on the tail and fins. It's native to a vast range across the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea to the Tuamotu Islands and north to southern Japan, where it inhabits coral reefs and lagoons.
It's the real toxic model behind a famous case of Batesian mimicry: the harmless Mimic Filefish has evolved to closely resemble this puffer's colouring, and the two species are often found shoaling together in the wild, giving the filefish an extra layer of protection from predators. It's a hardy, personable, easy-to-care-for pufferfish, and mature males are naturally territorial, guarding a range that encompasses several females. A single specimen may nip inappropriate tankmates, though this tendency is reduced when it's kept as a pair in a spacious tank with plenty of hiding places. It's reef safe with caution: it's best kept away from delicate corals and motile invertebrates, which it will graze on.
Like all pufferfish, it carries tetrodotoxin, a potent neurotoxin, so never eat a pufferfish, and wash your hands after tank maintenance. It can release toxin into the water when stressed, so use a rigid container and not a net for transfers.
