🐠 Hawaiian Whitespotted Toby (Canthigaster jactator)

📋 The Hawaiian Whitespotted Toby, also known as the Whitespotted Toby Pufferfish, White Spotted Sharpnose Puffer, or Spotted Puffer, has a reddish-brown body covered in numerous small white dots, with a distinctive white tail fin. It's a true Hawaiian endemic, found only around the Hawaiian Islands, though it occasionally makes its way into the wider aquarium trade. Its relatives, the Honeycomb Toby in the Indo-Pacific and the Central American Sharpnose in the Eastern Pacific, look almost identical, and geography is the most reliable way to tell them apart.
Like all Canthigaster, it's called a "toby" and not a puffer, and it makes a far more manageable alternative to the 10-inch-plus puffers for a home aquarium. It's peaceful but somewhat slow-moving, best kept with equally peaceful, swift-moving tankmates such as damselfish, and not with aggressive species like groupers, dottybacks, triggerfish, or angelfish. It grows to about 9cm. Its natural diet includes sponges, tunicates, zoanthids, crabs, and shrimp, so it isn't recommended for reef tanks with ornamental invertebrates. Its continuously growing teeth benefit from hard-shelled foods, which help wear them down naturally.
Like all pufferfish, it carries tetrodotoxin, a potent neurotoxin concentrated in its skin and organs, so never eat a pufferfish, and wash your hands after tank maintenance. Use a rigid container and not a net for transfers, since tobies become alarmed and puff when netted.
