📋 We want to be genuinely upfront about identification: this species was historically considered the same as the closely related Spotted Toby, or Ocellated Toby (Canthigaster solandri), and the two are still genuinely easy to confuse. The cleanest way to tell them apart is the orange colouration around the mouth and on the underside, which is genuinely more pronounced on this species.
 
📋 The Papuan Toby, also known as the Blue Dot Toby or Blue Dot Sharp-Nosed Puffer, has a genuinely striking red-brown body covered in small, bright blue-green dots, with orange markings highlighting its mouth and a black spot at the base of the dorsal fin.
Native to the Indo-West Pacific, from the Maldives to eastern New Guinea, north to the Philippines and Palau, and south to the Great Barrier Reef and New Caledonia, this species inhabits clear-water coral reefs, lagoons, and outer slopes at depths of roughly 6 to 50 metres.
This is a genuinely one of the hardier pufferfish species available, and, like all Canthigaster tobies, genuinely lacks pelvic fins, instead using its pectoral fins to move about. We want to be honest that some individuals may genuinely nip the fins of tank mates, particularly long-finned fish like comets, bannerfish, or tangs, though most specimens don't engage in this behaviour. It's considered reef safe with caution — it may genuinely nip at hard corals, and should not be kept with crustaceans. This species genuinely becomes alarmed in a net, so please always use a container for transfers.
