🐠 Papuan Toby (Canthigaster papua)

📋 The Papuan Toby, also known as the Blue Dot Toby or Blue Dot Sharp-Nosed Puffer, has a striking red-brown body covered in small, bright blue-green dots, with orange markings highlighting its mouth and a black spot at the base of the dorsal fin. It's native to the Indo-West Pacific, from the Maldives to eastern New Guinea, north to the Philippines and Palau, and south to the Great Barrier Reef and New Caledonia, where it inhabits clear-water coral reefs, lagoons, and outer slopes at depths of roughly 6 to 50 metres.
It's one of the hardier pufferfish available, and like all Canthigaster tobies it lacks pelvic fins, using its pectoral fins to move about. Identification note: it was historically treated as the same species as the closely related Spotted Toby (Canthigaster solandri), and the two are still easy to confuse. The cleanest way to tell them apart is the orange colouring around the mouth and underside, which is more pronounced on the Papuan Toby.
Some individuals may nip the fins of tankmates, particularly long-finned fish like comets, bannerfish, or tangs, though most don't. It's reef safe with caution: it may nip at hard corals, and shouldn't be kept with crustaceans. Like all pufferfish, it carries tetrodotoxin, a potent neurotoxin concentrated in its skin and organs, so never eat a pufferfish, and wash your hands after tank maintenance. Use a rigid container and not a net for transfers, since tobies become alarmed and puff when netted.
