🐠 Tiger Queen Anthias (Pyronotanthias lori)
A Peach-Pink Body With Bold Red Stripes • Yellow Scribble Markings on Males • An Elegant Deep-Water Rarity
 
📋 The Tiger Queen Anthias, also known as Lori's Anthias or the Queen Tiger Anthias, has a soft peach-to-pink body crossed by several bold, broad red stripes across the upper back, with the last stripe running horizontally across the base of the tail. Males are more decorative than females, developing bright yellow scribble markings alongside the red stripes and a distinctly protruding snout.
It ranges across a wide stretch of the Indo-Pacific, from Japan to the Tuamotu Islands and Rowley Shoals, and it's a relatively recent discovery, first collected in 1970 and formally described in 1976. It's collected from deep water, typically 18 to 70 metres, around caves, ledges, and steep outer reef slopes, which is why it does best under dim, subdued lighting rather than bright reef illumination. It's fully reef safe and does best kept singly or as a small harem in a spacious tank, with only one male per tank, since two together leads to extreme aggression. It's a little shy and can be harassed by bolder anthias, so introduce it after other tankmates are settled. It reaches up to 12cm, so plan on at least 208L for one fish, and 510L or more for a group with more than one male.
