📋 The Fathead Sunburst Anthias (Serranocirrhitus latus), also known as the Fathead Anthias or Swallowtail Basslet, is a genuinely distinctive fish with a vibrant pink to purple body, heavy yellow-to-orange scale margins, and sunburst-like yellow facial markings, complemented by elongated pectoral fins and a characteristic deep, "fat" head that gives the species its name.
Native to deep, cave-riddled reef slopes across the Western Pacific, including Indonesia and Fiji, this species is genuinely different from most anthias — rather than schooling in large open-water groups, it lives solitarily, in pairs, or in small harems tucked under overhangs and in caves.
Because of its natural deep-cave habitat, this species genuinely prefers low-to-moderate lighting with plenty of shaded hiding places, unlike many reef fish that thrive under intense modern reef lighting. It can also be a little slow to start feeding when newly acclimated, so offering a variety of meaty foods and limiting stress during the settling-in period genuinely helps.
With a spacious tank, subdued lighting, and peaceful tank mates, it thrives as a Vividly Coloured Cave-Dwelling Reef Display Fish.
