It's so effective that an entirely different, non-toxic species has evolved to fake it: the Mimic Filefish, which so closely copies the appearance of the toxic Valentini Puffer that predators leave it alone by mistake — and remarkably, both fish are represented in our collection below. Boxfish carry their own defense too, releasing a toxin called ostracitoxin when severely stressed, powerful enough to affect an entire tank.     • Tank size: 115–300 L (30+ gallons) minimum depending on species and adult size

    • Temp: 24–27 °C

    • Salinity: 1.020–1.025

    • Diet: Carnivore/Omnivore — shrimp, clams, squid, hard-shelled foods to wear down continuously growing teeth

    • Behavior: Not reef safe — most species will pick at invertebrates; genuinely capable of releasing toxins when severely stressed; never house with species that might nip fins
